Early period notched adzes found in Northland were primarily made of argillite quarried from locations around the Marlborough and Nelson regions. During the Māori Archaic period found on the North Island were commonly made from greywacke from Motutapu Island or basalt from Ōpito Bay in the Coromandel, similar to adzes constructed on other Pacific Islands. Prehistoric Māori adzes from New Zealand (called toki in Māori) were for wood carving, typically made from pounamu sourced from the South Island. ![]() To this day, iron adzes are used all over rural Africa for various purposes - from digging pit latrines, and chopping firewood, to tilling crop fields - whether they are of maize (corn), coffee, tea, pyrethrum, beans, millet, yams or a plethora of other cash and subsistence crops. Īs Iron Age technology moved south into Africa with migrating ancient Egyptians, they carried their technology with them, including adzes. It was apparently the foreleg of a freshly sacrificed bull or cow with which the mouth was touched. The ahnetjer ( Manuel de Codage transliteration: aH-nTr) depicted as an adze-like instrument, was used in the Opening of the Mouth ceremony, intended to convey power over their senses to statues and mummies. It was not until the later bronze age that the handle passes through an eye at the top of the blade. Stone blades were fastened to the handle by tying and early bronze blades continued this simple construction. Originally the adze blades were made of stone, but already in the Predynastic Period copper adzes had all but replaced those made of flint. The adze is depicted in ancient Egyptian art from the Old Kingdom onward. ![]() A similar tool is called a mattock, which differs by having two blades, one perpendicular to the handle and one parallel. Two basic forms of an adze are the hand adze (short hoe)-a short-handled tool swung with one hand-and the foot adze (hoe)-a long-handled tool capable of powerful swings using both hands, the cutting edge usually striking at foot or shin level. They are used for smoothing or carving wood in hand woodworking, and as a hoe for agriculture and horticulture. Adzes have been used since the Stone Age. AdzeĪn adze ( / æ d z/) or adz is an ancient and versatile cutting tool similar to an axe but with the cutting edge perpendicular to the handle rather than parallel. Generally, the puppeteer is very involved in the shadow theatre. After debuting and once one has acquired sufficient expertise, if it is merited the performer is given title of Master ( Hayali, “one who animates the shadow play”, “image creator”). The apprentice ( çırak) adds sound effects, plays the flute, drum ( düdük) and tambourine ( def) to mark the entrance of each character, which he holds for the performer and then reprises when the figure is leaving the scene. The performer must be very clever, a good actor, have a strong memory, a good voice and possess a level of culture, and musical ability. Virtuosity is seen in the number of figures that can be moved at the same time until that alone can provide the spectacle. The puppet master ( karagözcü) operates the figures with the aid of wooden rods 50 to 60 centimetres in length, affixed at the attachment point, generally on the figure’s shoulder, but sometimes the arms. It is lit from behind by an electric bulb (in the past by a candle or flame), which casts the shadows as the coloured silhouettes which the performer dances. The screen is of thin white cloth measuring about 1 or 1.10 metres by 60 to 80 centimetres. Formerly, according to the size of the performance space, there were three sizes of figures. Decorative elements and animals range from 7 to 45 centimetres. Their size ranges from 24 to 40 centimetres, and depends on their use, their importance, or their strength. They are, during their role on stage, articulated at the neck, the waist or legs, and, for some, at the arms – as in the case of female dancers and Karagöz, the eponymous hero. The figures are attached to each other by a string of gut. Using Chinese ink the lines and details of the costume are traced and painted with vegetable dyes in lively, translucent colours, which each maker keeps secret. The outlines and the details of the design are cut and incised on a table of lime wood with a dozen types of sharp steel blades ( nevrekân). The flat figures traditionally are made by the showman from hide – camel, water buffalo, cow or calf – which is translucent from the washing, scraping, and polishing. These were such performers as Hasanzade Mehmet Çelebi, much appreciated by Sultan Murat IV (1623-1640) Rıza Efendi, the performer for Sultan Abdülaziz (1861-1876) or Hayali Mehmed, who played for Sultan Abdülhamid II (1876-1909). At the palace and in the homes of dignitaries, this art produced performers who excelled with their verve for satire, Persian and Arabic literary knowledge, as well as their understanding of philosophy and music. ![]() And in private homes for celebration of a circumcision or of a winter evening. A rare curiosity, to see the parade of the men on the street of this local anthill, through these slight plays of a thousand-year-old repertory” (André Antoine).Ī performance of the Ottoman cities, karagöz was shown in the popular cafés, especially during the month of Ramadan, sometimes in the open air. “At the inn in a large room, opening on the little platform of the entrance, stuffed, for the evenings’ performances, with all the young crowd of the quarter, packed in to see the simple guignol, yet also the authentic, old-style Karaguez karagöz, illuminated by the lamp shining behind the white cloth screen on which float the coloured shadows of the popular puppet show. The burlesque performance, seemingly harmless, defies constraint in a spirit of satire, and has enchanted the public, especially the Ottoman middle class, for hundreds of years. His predicaments remind us of Punch in England, Hanswurst in Germany, Kasperl in Austria, and Polichinelle and Guignol in France. The Turkish shadow theatre gets its name from its primary hero, Karagöz (“Black Eye” in Turkish) and a Persian origin has been suggested by some (see Iran). ![]() "Everywhere" remains Branch's most well-known song. If you get exactly 5, you win 10x your bid, so 50 points. If you bid 5, you want to get at least 5. So we've already talked about how the goal is to get the number of tricks that you and your partner bid. ![]() The winner of each trick leads on the next.Īfter the first spade has been played, then spades are "broken." Scoring If no spades are played, the highest card wins of the suit that was played first. ![]() ![]() So even if someone plays the Ace of diamonds, and I play the 2 of spades, I win that trick if no other spades are played. If someone plays a spade, that spade trumps all other cards EXCEPT for higher spades. If you do not have the same suit, you can play any card of any suit! The card must be of the same suit as the person who started (in this case, the person to the left of the dealer). Then, again in clockwise, each player lays down a card (trick) face up. It can be any heart, diamond or club, but no spades. Playing SpadesĪfter all of the bidding is done, the player to the dealers left begins by playing any card EXCEPT for a spade. There's also a penalty for bidding nil and getting 1 or more tricks. Why would anyone do that though? Well, there's a huge bonus if you can bid nil and succeed. This is basically a player trying NOT to win any tricks. Billy and Sarah's goal is to win at least 5 tricks based on their bids (4+1), Terrance and Beyonce will attempt to win at least 7 (4+3).Īs mentioned previously, a bid of zero is also called a nil bid. A bid of zero or "nil" is another strategy we'll talk about shortly. But be smart and remember that it's very difficult to get all or even half of the tricks. Bidding then continues clockwise around the table. The first player to bid is the person to the left of the dealer. This is the number of tricks that team has to win in order to get a positive score. The teams then add together the total number of bids. Before each round of Spades begins, each player will bid (or guess) how many tricks they will take. Biddingīidding is simply guessing how many "tricks" you can take. The dealer will deal out all of the cards so each player will end up with 13 to start. The goal is to accumulate points, and the first to 500 points wins. You are on the same team as the person across from you and the same goes for the other two. Once the score is tallied after each hand, another deal begins. In a typical game, there are four players and two team. Once 10 sandbags are reached, the team looses 100 points and starts over with 0 sandbags again. When either of these are not met, the team will get -100 and -200 points respectively. If a nil is bid and met, the team gets an additional 100 points. If a bid is not met, each trick in the bid is worth -10 points. If the bid for a team is met, each trick counts 10 points, with any additional tricks (sandbags) worth 1 point. Once the full hand has been played, the game is scored. Spades cannot lead a trick until they have been broken in another trick or if that is the only suit the lead player has left in their hand. The winner of the trick leads the next trick. If a trick contains a spade, the highest spade wins. If a trick is played without a spade, the highest lead suit card takes the trick. Moving clockwise, each player plays a card to follow suit, unless they do not have the suit, in which they can play any card in their hand. The Spades game begins gameplay with the player to the left of the dealer, who can play any card other than a Spade. The payout will be higher if you achieve it, but the loss even greater if you don't - so bid this at your own risk! Teams must reach the total number of tricks they have bid together in order to get a positive score. If you bid a Blind Nil, you must bid a 0 without seeing your cards. The table then enters into the bidding phase where they estimate the number of tricks they can take with the hand they have been dealt. Spades is a game of trumps, where all spades are the best cards in the game and will beat all other suits.Įach hand begins with all 52 cards being dealt to the players. The version of 24/7 Spades is the most popular and is played with four Spades players in a team format, where players across the table are considered teammates. Spades is played with a basic set of 52 cards and card value ranks from 2, the lowest, to Ace, the highest. Spades is a casual card game developed in the 1930's in the USA. ![]() By the EPA's own measure, 2,4-D has already been detected in groundwater and surface water, as well as in drinking water. ![]() Depending on the formulation, it can drift through the air from the fields where it is sprayed or be tracked inside homes by pets or children. According to Pullen, "When you combine increased use with the potential for increased developmental, cancer, and other health impacts, you could create a perfect storm of hazard and exposure coming together."Īlso problematic: 2,4-D sticks around in the environment. Department of Agriculture estimates that by 2020, the use of 2,4-D on America's farms could rise between 100 percent and 600 percent now that it has been approved as part of Enlist Duo. As Pullen puts it, "These chemicals by themselves can be problematic, but when we start combining them with other toxic chemicals, we're just creating a new problem in order to solve another problem." ![]() But when the weeds it was intended to kill also developed resistance, 2,4-D was added to make the mix more effective. Originally, plants genetically engineered to resist Roundup were sprayed with that herbicide alone. In other words, farmers can now douse their fields with high concentrations of the weed killer without worrying that it will also destroy their crops. It is used mainly on big farms, where it is sprayed on genetically modified crops called Enlist soy and Enlist corn that have been engineered to be resistant to the poisons. Enlist Duo, as the combo is called, was already legal in several states. Environmental Protection Agency approved the combined use of 2,4-D and the popular weed killer Roundup (also known as glyphosate, a whole other-and in many ways more worrying-story when it comes to health and the environment). But even though fetuses, infants, and children are at highest risk of these, no studies have looked directly at the effects of 2,4-D on those groups.ĭespite concerns about potential health risks, in 2014 the U.S. There are reports that 2,4-D can decrease fertility and raise the risk of birth defects. "Our thyroid works to ensure the proper timing and development of the brain." "That's really important when we're thinking about development," says Kristi Pullen, a staff scientist in NRDC's Health program. Dozens of epidemiological, animal, and laboratory studies have shown a link between 2,4-D and thyroid disorders. Laboratory studies suggest that 2,4-D can impede the normal action of estrogen, androgen, and most conclusively, thyroid hormones. More conclusive is the proof that 2,4-D falls into a class of compounds called endocrine-disrupting chemicals, compounds that mimic or inhibit the body's hormones. Nevertheless, in 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer declared 2,4-D a possible human carcinogen, based on evidence that it damages human cells and, in a number of studies, caused cancer in laboratory animals. But both of these can be caused by a number of chemicals, including dioxin, which was frequently mixed into formulations of 2,4-D until the mid-1990s. Researchers have observed apparent links between exposure to 2,4-D and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (a blood cancer) and sarcoma (a soft-tissue cancer). Take the link between chronic exposure to 2,4-D and cancer: "The evidence isn't clear enough to draw conclusions with confidence, but it is better to take precautions to prevent possible cancers than to wait for more evidence," says Jennifer Sass, an NRDC senior scientist. ![]() Public health experts can't always draw a firm conclusion from studies whose methodologies are lacking in scientific rigor. It's not always easy to determine whether a particular substance is causing harm or just happens to be present when some other agent is to blame. The evidence is slowly mounting-but not yet conclusive. The problem is, the herbicide that was once considered clean and green may no longer be safe by today's standards. It's used widely in agriculture in soybean, corn, sugarcane, and wheat fields, and it turns up in most "weed and feed" products as well as in many lawn treatments. The pesticide, which allows not just grasses but also fruits and vegetables to flourish, can attack both the roots and leaves of weeds by making the unwanted plant's cells grow out of control-sort of like inducing cancer in the plant to kill it or drastically slow its spread.
